DIY Overlay Concrete Countertops | Modern Builds | EP. 18
Remodel your bathroom easily and quick!
Today on Modern Builds I'll show you how I made concrete countertops with a skim coat overlay technique. This method can be applied to all sorts of countertop materials from laminates to doors, like I used. Remember this is an outdoor project, and isn't food safe.

awesome dude!
Another cool project, love how you cloned yourself when you were sanding…must have made the job go quicker ha ha. Love your work! Have a great Christmas
Haha! Thanks bud, merry Christmas.
what do you suggest to keep the concrete from geting so hot in summer you cant touch it? my back yard gets western sun exposure so my tile thats on my BBQ gets real hot I want to redo it with concrete because the tile is coming off
Mark Vidales try an awning or something similar
Interesting and cool looking. I’d love to see a follow in a few months to see how well the technique is holding up. Thanks for sharing! Cheers.
thanks. I’ll do a follow up for sure. I’m excited to see how it holds up over time too
This is floor patch. And Henry sucks. Use Ardex feather finish and apply it with a 14-16 inch finishing floor trowel and you will cut 2-3 coats out. Mix it with a drill. Ardex goes down thicker and smoother. Trust me
I believe the Henry and the Ardex are similar enough that both work. The mix he made looked too thin though. Ardex recommends 2:1 water to product, and it comes out more like cake frosting or peanut butter. Too thin and from what I understand will make it less durable.
excelente video! gracias por compartir. SUSCRITO!
This material contains crystalline silica and should not be sanded. The more you breath in, the more you’re putting your health at risk.
Tim C great tip, a lot of ppl are using toxic materials with no protection.
Carnauba <3
I had no idea you could do that!
door saves the weight of all concrete
Concrete dust in lung won’t be fun, maybe a mask next time?
Great project.
I like your deftness and heading off the trolls. Excellent wrap up statement!
how can you keep the concrete from getting so hot on hot summer days?
+Mark Vidales Put it in the shade…. Not really sure
Can you do a video on the sink
that you for your video it really helped me a lot for my restaurant protect. I have been looking for many youtube videos to guide me on counter tops for buffet display tables tables but I haven’t found them until I saw this video.
That’s awesome! Glad I could help.
i dont know how this video have too few viewers!! you make it seems too simple
Thanks a lot!
10 months later, have your counter tops cracked? Covering exterior wood with a thin layer of concrete really seems like a path to cracking.
That’s exactly what I was just worried about – so… Idk..
One thing I saw that might work, outdoors for a good suggestion in general, would be to incorporate metal on top somehow between the wood and the concrete so the top could be thicker
Freddie Bingham Fiz aqui em casa no meu chão, e depois vi seu trabalho aqui, ficou muito bom. Parabéns pelos seus projetos. Um abraço.
One would also think that the thermal expansion rates are different thus exacerbating the problem.
A little tip……if You’re not going to use a trowel, put a small radius on the corners of your spatula. Also, use organic movements and not dead strait.
Im binge watching your videos right now. This is amazing work. You have such a talent.
Thank you!! I appreciate it!
How do you finish these for indoor/food grade standard?
I’m not sure, but with an epoxy bar top finish, it should be fine
Try Endurable brand urethane sealer (no affiliation). I’ve used it before and it works great when applied with a HPLV sprayer. The spec sheet says it is safe for counter tops. If the whole slab is sealed on all sides it shouldn’t warp either. Unfortunately you can’t order their products online so find a distributor near you. We also offer a non-toxic, water based sealer that’s safe for counters (Creto Top Seal). Because it’s ultra thin it doesn’t hold up well to abrasion so I only use it occasionally on concrete counters. You can order our products online so here’s the links to both products. http://www.hdipinc.com/endurableconcretesealer.html https://cretoseal.com/shop/top-seal-one-gallon/
Can you do that on crappy counter tops (solid laminate etc)?
Yeah!!
